Gary Vaynerchuck (also known as Gary Vee) is a bit of a wunderkind when it comes to entrepreneurship, social media and digital marketing. He’s energetic and candid, and not afraid to throw truth bombs and swear words to get his message across.
In case you’re not familiar with Vaynerchuck, he is a venture capitalist and owner of VaynerMedia, his eponymous digital marketing agency. He is perhaps best known as a professional motivator and for the awesome business and marketing advice he offers through his YouTube series, The #AskGaryVee Show, and other social platforms.
What I like most about Vaynerchuck is the incredible amount of NEW information I learned about social media and digital marketing, which is hard to come by in this content-saturated world. In less than half a year of reading and listening to him, I feel I have come away smarter and more motivated.
So what are Gary Vaynerchuck’s top digital marketing lessons? Read my list below!
1. Document, don’t create
Many of us struggle to produce content for social media. We take hours and sometimes days to create that perfect post.
Not Gary Vee. In a typical week, Vaynerchuck will post dozens of items on Snapchat and Instagram…. And this is not even including his long-form YouTube, blog and podcast content! So what’s Vaynerchuck’s advice for producing lots of content? In addition to creating long-form content, he encourages his followers to “document” their everyday life and experiences.

2. Feed the content monster!
Gary Vaynerchuck creates content like a boss by repurposing his existing content. For example, he will take content from his bread-and-butter #AskGaryVee blog and transform it into high-quality quotes, images, blog posts… The list goes on!
Repurposing content is content marketing 101 and will help you reach a wider audience. Think about it. You might be a great writer, but many people don’t read blog posts. Some people are more visual and may be attracted to infographics or image quotes. So why not create content for those people as well?
Read my article on how to repurpose content.
3. Give purpose to your social networks
A common social media mistake is to regurgitate the same content across social networks. What’s posted on Facebook is posted on Twitter and so on and so on. This gets boring pretty quick and disincentivizes people from checking out your other social networks.
Gary Vaynerchuck gives every one of his social media channels its own content and purpose. For example, Vaynerchuck uses Instagram for selfies and quotes, and Twitter primarily as a customer service tool. All of his social media channels are unique and designed for each network’s target audience.
4. Try to destroy your business
Many people and organizations are averse to change, which makes a lot of sense to a degree. Why break something that isn’t broken, right? But Gary Vaynerchuck takes a different approach. He prides himself on being an innovator and is always experimenting with new content and social media platforms. He regularly tells his followers to figure out ways to destroy their own business.
As a creator and marketer, you, too, should dedicate time to play with new social platforms and content types. If you’re a writer, try doing a podcast; if you’re on YouTube, try creating a short video on Instagram. The worst thing that could happen is it doesn’t work. The lesson here is not to end up like Blockbuster!
5. Be you
What makes Gary Vaynerchuck special is his authenticity. You can see this firsthand by following his Snapchat, Instagram and Twitter accounts. He’s unapologetically candid in his approach and is not afraid to show his personality through social media.
Now, you may not be as extroverted as Vaynerchuck, but that doesn’t mean you can’t highlight your particular personality traits. For example, your brand/personality might be more quirky or serious, which is completely okay. Personality is what gives your content that special oomph that will help separate you from others.
I strongly encourage you to check out Gary Vaynerchuck’s website at garyvaynerchuck.com. I believe you will learn a lot from the experience, as I did.
